What is a GS1 Digital Link QR code?

Beyond the traditional barcode

Traditional barcodes encode only a GTIN — a product identifier. A GS1 Digital Link QR code encodes a URL in a standardised format, allowing it to resolve to any web resource: a product page, a Digital Product Passport, a recall notice, or a verification certificate.

Required by EU Digital Product Passport

The EU Battery Regulation (2023/1542) and ESPR mandates require GS1 Digital Link QR codes as the carrier for Digital Product Passports. This free tool generates the correct QR code format to EU standards — ready for testing and prototyping.

What this free tool does

  • Validates your GTIN (check digit + format)
  • Generates a GS1 Digital Link URI (ISO/IEC 18975 standard)
  • Creates a scannable QR code in the correct GS1 format
  • Provides a downloadable PNG (800×800 px)

Frequently asked questions

Is this tool really free? What are the limitations?

Yes — completely free, no account, no limits. The QR code encodes a GS1 Digital Link URI pointing to traceable.digital. If you want the URL to resolve to a live Digital Product Passport with your product data, you need a Traceable account (free plan available). Without an account, scanning the QR code will reach a Traceable landing page.

What GTIN formats are supported?

GTIN-8 (8 digits), GTIN-12 (12 digits — UPC-A format), GTIN-13 (13 digits — EAN-13 format), and GTIN-14 (14 digits). All formats are automatically padded to GTIN-14 (the canonical GS1 format) when generating the Digital Link URI.

What is the GS1 Digital Link URI format?

GS1 Digital Link URIs follow the pattern: https://[domain]/01/[gtin14]. The "01" is the GS1 Application Identifier for GTIN. This format is defined in the GS1 Digital Link standard (ISO/IEC 18975) and is the required QR code format for EU Digital Product Passports under the Battery Regulation and ESPR.

Is this QR code EU Battery Regulation compliant?

The QR code format meets the GS1 Digital Link standard required by EU Battery Regulation 2023/1542 and ESPR 2024/1781. However, regulatory compliance requires the QR code to resolve to a fully populated Digital Product Passport with all mandatory fields — which requires a Traceable account. This free tool generates the correct carrier (QR code + GS1 URI); the DPP content is the next step.
