Is this tool really free? What are the limitations?
Yes. The tool is free and needs no account. The QR code encodes a GS1 Digital Link URI on traceable.digital, and as of 27 September 2026 scanning it reaches a page-not-found page, not a product page. For a QR code that resolves to a live Digital Product Passport with your product data, create the passport in a Traceable account (free trial available), which generates the passport's own QR code.
What GTIN formats are supported?
GTIN-8 (8 digits), GTIN-12 (12 digits — UPC-A format), GTIN-13 (13 digits — EAN-13 format), and GTIN-14 (14 digits). All formats are automatically padded to GTIN-14 (the canonical GS1 format) when generating the Digital Link URI.
What is the GS1 Digital Link URI format?
GS1 Digital Link URIs follow the pattern: https://[domain]/01/[gtin14]. The "01" is the GS1 Application Identifier for GTIN. This format is defined in the GS1 Digital Link URI Syntax standard, which conforms to ISO/IEC 18975:2024. Neither the Battery Regulation nor ESPR names it: both require an identifier conforming to the ISO/IEC 15459 series, which a GS1 Digital Link URI satisfies.
Is this QR code EU Battery Regulation compliant?
The QR code follows the GS1 Digital Link standard. Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 requires the QR code and the unique identifier to comply with the ISO/IEC 15459 series or their equivalent (Article 77(3)), and ESPR 2024/1781 requires the same series for data carriers and unique product identifiers where relevant; GS1 Digital Link is one conforming option, not the mandated one. Compliance also requires the QR code to resolve to a fully populated battery passport with all mandatory fields.
