Digital Product Passports — The Basics
A Digital Product Passport (DPP) is a structured, machine-readable data record that accompanies a physical product throughout its lifecycle. It contains standardised information about the product's composition, origin, environmental footprint, repairability, and end-of-life handling. Under EU regulations ESPR 2024/1781 and Battery Regulation 2023/1542, DPPs are mandatory for products sold in the European Union — starting with batteries in February 2027, then expanding to textiles, tyres, electronics, and eventually all ESPR-regulated categories.
Any economic operator placing a regulated product on the EU market — manufacturers, importers, authorised representatives, and distributors. If you make, import, or sell batteries, textiles, tyres, or electronics in the EU, you will need DPPs. The obligation falls on the entity placing the product on the market, but supply chain data must come from upstream suppliers.
EU Battery Regulation 2023/1542 requires battery passports from February 18, 2027 for EV, LMT, and industrial batteries above 2 kWh. No ESPR delegated act has been adopted yet for textiles, tyres, or electronics. The Commission's Working Plan targets adoption around 2027 for textiles and tyres and names electronics/ICT in a 2029 indicative bucket, but no binding compliance date exists for any of these categories until the relevant delegated act is adopted. The European Commission confirms the EU Central DPP Registry itself goes live 20 July 2026, one day after the 19 July 2026 Article 13(1) deadline for the Commission to set it up.
Under ESPR Article 74, EU member states must set penalties that are "effective, proportionate, and dissuasive." Non-compliant products cannot legally be placed on the EU market. The regulation leaves the specific fine amounts to each member state's own national law rather than setting a fixed EU-wide figure, so the exact penalty varies by country. Beyond fines, consequences include product seizure at borders, market access suspension, and reputational damage.

GS1 Digital Link is the international standard for encoding product identifiers in QR codes. Every DPP published on Traceable gets a GS1 Digital Link QR code in the format /01/[GTIN]/21/[serial]. Scanning the QR code resolves to the public DPP viewer. The ESPR requires DPP data carriers to comply with the standards referenced in its Annex III, and GS1 Digital Link is the leading real-world candidate manufacturers are building toward.
Yes. Traceable provides a RESTful API with endpoints for creating, managing, and publishing DPPs programmatically. JSON-LD structured data output. W3C Verifiable Credentials Data Model 2.0 is on our 2026 roadmap. API access is available on Growth plans and above.
Blockchain anchoring is currently in beta. It creates a cryptographic hash of your passport data on a public blockchain, providing tamper-proof evidence that your data existed in a specific state at a specific time. This is relevant for enterprise procurement RFPs that require immutability guarantees.
Security, Privacy & Compliance
All data is hosted in EU data centres (Dublin, Ireland). No data leaves the European Union. Encryption at rest and in transit. GDPR-compliant by architecture with data processing agreements, subprocessor transparency, and data minimisation throughout.

Yes. Full JSON-LD data export is available on all plans. CSV export for product data is also supported. Your data is yours — portable, exportable, and deletable on request.
Published passports remain accessible via their QR codes for a grace period after cancellation. You can export all your data before cancelling. Contact us for specific data retention details.
